Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Ormolu Mounted Credenza Cabinet Sideboard

19th century
Description

An outstanding quality antique Victorian burr walnut credenza cabinet sideboard dating to circa 1870. The cabinet has a beautifully figured burr walnut top above a gently shaped breakfront with curved glazed ends and extensive gilt brass ormolu mounts.

The central cupboard door is particularly decorative with an oval mirrored panel surrounded by shaped burr walnut reserves, fine line inlay and applied gilt floral mounts. The glazed side cabinets have fitted shelves and are framed with further burr walnut and ormolu decoration. The whole stands on a shaped plinth base with small turned feet.

The quality of the burr walnut is exceptional with wonderful figuring across the top and front. The extensive ormolu mounts, decorative beading, fine inlay and curved glazed ends make this a particularly impressive example of Victorian cabinetmaking.

Credenzas of this type were made as important drawing room furniture and were designed to display porcelain, glass and other treasured objects while providing an impressive decorative focal point. Today it works equally well as a statement sideboard, display cabinet or drinks cabinet.

Condition Report

This antique credenza is in very good condition for its age with marks and signs of use consistent with its circa 1870 date. The burr walnut retains a lovely rich colour and patina. The mirror shows some age-related foxing which adds to the character of the piece.

Originating in the mid-to-late 19th century, a Victorian burr walnut credenza is a decorative storage cabinet featuring highly figured walnut veneers, cast metal ormolu mounts, and often curved glass side doors flanking a central panelled door.

Craftsmen utilised solid wood timber frames layered with burr walnut veneers, brass stringing, cast gilt-metal fittings, and hand-cut glass or mirror panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished details, cast brass or gilt-bronze fittings showing natural oxidisation, internal dovetail joinery, and age-appropriate wear to the original French polish.

Position the cabinet as a focal anchor in a hallway or dining room, pairing its detailed woodwork with modern art or minimalist lighting placed on the top surface.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the wood veneer, dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply beeswax annually to preserve the luster.
