Khorassan Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

The unusual palette on this rug makes it quite desirable for the current interiors market which leans towards understated and paler colours. The tones are quite subtle and the allover design consisting of boteh marching to and fro across the field is also preferred to the central medallion design. Note how well drawn the main border is, especially at the bottom end where it slips underneath the field and rather than framing it appears to push the centre forward. This piece has some charm and a very elegant look.

Good condition with just a little wear.

This Khorassan rug originates from 1920 in a Persian style, fashioned from wool and cotton. The rectangular textile measures 190 cm high and 129 cm wide, sized to anchor a living room seating area or a study floor. A light yellow field displays a repeating pattern of red, black, and cream boteh motifs arranged in orderly rows. A dark floral rosette border frames the central field, complemented by secondary geometric guard stripes in black, red, and yellow tones. The low pile shows subtle wear consistent with age, maintaining a uniform appearance across the surface. The subdued palette incorporates muted yellow and soft red hues alongside darker outlines. The all-over layout avoids a central medallion design, presenting a continuous flow of marching boteh motifs from top to bottom. The detailed border work includes an unusual alignment at the lower end where the frame intersects the field. Placed upon a floor in a home, the piece introduces understated colour and traditional pattern work to an interior space.

Originating from northeastern Persia, Khorassan rugs are characterised by fine hand-knotting, soft wool, and intricate designs, frequently featuring boteh repeating patterns or detailed central floral medallions.

These carpets are crafted using soft, high-grade wool for the pile, hand-spun and woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation.

Authentic examples display asymmetrical knotting, high knot density, supple pile, and traditional design motifs framed by multi-tiered geometric or floral borders.

Position the carpet under key seating or dining arrangements, using its detailed pattern and rich tones to anchor the floor space against neutral walls and contemporary furniture.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug annually to balance foot traffic, and treat spills immediately using a clean cloth and mild wool-safe detergent.
