Karaja Rug

1920 - 1940
Description

Karaja rugs have the same decorative qualities as Heriz pieces although this one has a much subtler palette. It is unusual to find rugs that are square and this is no exception as it has been expertly reduced at some point. Often this is a problem but when it is an invisible repair it doesn’t detract from the overall look and in this case I think the design is still well balanced. The blue background has good abrash and there are some really lovely colours throughout the rug. The white border brightens the appearance and sets the inner field back as if one is looking through a window. A very tidy rug with great appeal and a subtle beauty.

Very good condition apart from the reduction in length. As I state in the description this has been expertly executed and is very hard to find.

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Persian Karaja Rug to the 1930s.

This hand-knotted Persian tribal rug dates from 1930 and follows the style of Karaja floor coverings. Made from wool and cotton, the textile displays a navy blue field accented with geometric diamond medallions, latch-hook motifs, and a multi-band decorative border in shades of white, terracotta, red, and blue. The piece has abrash across the blue background and white borders that brighten the appearance. It measures 154 cm high and 149 cm wide in a square format achieved through an expert reduction in length at some point in its history. Suitable for placement within an English country house interior, the rug provides a subtle beauty and decorative warmth underfoot in a living room, study, or bedroom. The tidy construction and balanced arrangement of motifs allow the textile to sit comfortably in traditional or transitional schemes while anchoring the surrounding furnishings.

Karaja rugs originate from the village of Karaja in Northwest Iran, located near the Heriz weaving region, and are recognised for their distinctive geometric regional patterns produced since the nineteenth century.

Traditionally hand-knotted, these carpets feature a durable wool pile woven onto a cotton warp and weft foundation using symmetrical Turkish knots.

Authentic Karaja pieces feature a distinct linear layout of central field medallions, typically alternating between square-diamond shapes and stylized latch-hooked geometric figures.

These geometric carpets anchor living spaces by contrasting structured contemporary furniture with hand-knotted textile patterns over neutral hardwood or stone flooring.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a suction brush, prompt spot cleaning using water and mild detergent, and periodic professional rug cleaning preserve the natural wool fibres.
