Description

This exceptional namakdan (salt-bag) was woven circa 1900 by Afshar tribes in Kerman Province, southern Persia.

Originally found in a 'bokcha' (dowry chest) in Iran, this fabulous salt-bag is in amazing condition for its age and might never have been used but instead, kept as a highly-prized dowry weaving. Woven in one complete piece, cut from the loom, folded in half and the sides sewn up, for this reason, the stylised birds and quadrupeds on the back side are upsides-down! A very collectable namakdan.

Size: 63cm x 40cm (2' 1" x 1' 4").

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Salt bags were utilitarian woven containers crafted by nomadic and village tribes in Persia, specifically used to store rock salt for livestock or domestic use during seasonal migrations.

These pieces are typically constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and foundation, often incorporating supplementary weft-wrapping or kilim flatweave techniques alongside natural plant-based dyes.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating the irregularity of hand-spun wool, the presence of genuine natural dyestuffs showing characteristic abrash, traditional tribal iconography, and the integrity of the original structure and fringes.

These compact woven pieces are frequently mounted and framed as textile art, displayed on walls or placed on specialised stands to showcase their intricate tribal patterns as focal points in contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, maintaining stable humidity levels to deter insect activity, and occasionally vacuuming gently through a protective mesh screen.
