Cloisonne is an ancient metalwork technique where enamel is applied to compartments created by soldering silver, gold, or copper wires onto a metal base. The method dates back centuries, gaining significant prominence during the Ming Dynasty in China and later in Meiji period Japan.

Traditional cloisonne pieces are constructed using a base metal body, typically copper or brass, decorated with flattened metal wires forming the design cells. These cells are filled with coloured vitreous enamel paste, which is then fired at high temperatures and polished to a smooth finish.

Authentic antique cloisonne can be identified by the weight of the metal, visible pitting or tiny air bubbles in the hand-ground enamel, and the presence of fine wirework without modern machine precision. Examination of the unglazed base often reveals patination and marks indicative of age.

Cloisonne plates add vibrant colour, texture, and historical depth to contemporary spaces. They can be mounted on walls as art groupings, displayed upright on plate stands on sideboards, or used flat on coffee tables to hold small decorative objects.

Antique cloisonne should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or submerging the pieces in water, as moisture can oxidise the exposed base metals and damage the enamel integrity.
