Aneroid barometers were invented in the mid-19th century, replacing liquid mercury versions with a flexible metal capsule that responded to atmospheric pressure changes. They became immensely popular on land and at sea due to their portability and durability.

These instruments typically feature robust outer cases made of brass, steel, or cast iron to withstand maritime environments. The interior dials are often printed paper or enamel mounted on brass plates, protected by a heavy bevelled glass lens.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-engraved or finely printed dial faces, maker signatures from established opticians or instrument makers, heavy cast metal bezels, and signs of genuine oxidation and age on the internal mechanisms.

A vintage barometer serves as a striking focal point on panelled walls, in home offices, or alongside maritime collections. Its metallic sheen and circular geometry contrast well against both minimalist neutral walls and dark, moody paint colours.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and rapid temperature fluctuations to protect the paper dial and internal springs. Clean brass and steel casings gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes.
