Karabagh Runner with European Design, Caucasus, Circa 1870, 4.57m X 1.17m

19th century
Description

This stunning runner is a fine example of a small group of carpets and runners produced by the Caucasian weavers in the Karabagh region which reflect a European aesthetic, but with the angularity and dramatic colouring one associates with the Caucasus. At the end of the 19th century, the presence of substantial numbers of Russian military and bureaucratic personnel in the Caucasus influenced the styles of rugs and carpets that were being woven in the villages and workshops. This runner with its design of roses and dramatic golden swags is clearly a reference to French decorative styles so popular with the Russians. The brown background which has corroded in places gives the design a relief or three-dimensional effect in places. Most examples I have seen of this group have a black or dark blue background, The light brown background of our piece coupled with the pale greens, pinks and golds, makes the overall appearance lighter and less formal than other examples. Note also the simple repeating neo-classical border, another clear reference to the European ancestry of this piece. Professionally cleaned and with only some minor restoration to the brown background, this piece has has survived the generations well, and is now ready for immediate use.

This hand-knotted wool hallway runner originates from the Karabagh region of the Caucasus during the late nineteenth century and measures 457 cm high by 117 cm wide. It displays a Caucasian style influenced by a European aesthetic, presenting a dark brown background decorated with red floral cartouches, pink roses, pale green accents, golden scrolling foliage, and a simple repeating striped border. In a home today, this runner serves as a practical floor covering for hallways and large corridors, lending an English Country House design vibe to the interior space. The piece exhibits some minor professional restoration to the brown background, along with natural corrosion of the dark brown wool that creates a three-dimensional relief effect across the surface.

Karabagh rugs originate from the Southern Caucasus region and are renowned for their distinct blend of traditional Caucasian weaving techniques and Western-influenced motifs. During the nineteenth century, these rugs frequently incorporated French and Russian floral patterns, featuring prominent roses and scrolling foliage woven on dark backgrounds.

Authentic nineteenth-century Caucasian runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. The dyes were traditionally derived from natural vegetable sources, producing rich shades of dark brown, terracotta, red, and ochre that age with a characteristic patina.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted construction visible on the reverse, natural variations in dye colour known as abrash, and wool foundation threads. They often showcase European-inspired floral motifs, such as French-style cartouches and roses, juxtaposed against geometric Caucasian structural borders.

A long floral runner functions exceptionally well in grand entryways, hallways, or gallery corridors, grounding minimalist or classic architectural spaces. The deep ground tones and vibrant floral accents pair seamlessly with dark wood panelling, exposed stone, or neutral contemporary floorboards.

Vacuum gently without using a rotating beater bar to prevent fibre damage and preserve the hand-knotted pile. Use a high-quality rug underlay to prevent slipping and reduce wear, and consult a professional antique textile conservator for deep cleaning or restoration.
