Description

Vanity-bags or 'chantehs' as they are known in Persian, were highly-prized possessions amongst the women of the Persian tribes and were never intended to be sold. With the advent of commercialism in the early twentieth century, bags like this have been sold amongst the tribes when plastic and gunny sacks were an easier option! The nomads today, have now lost their ancient weaving heritage and few bags like this can now be found amongst the nomads in Iran, very sadly.

This magnificent chanteh was made by the Arab Nafar tribe within the Khamseh Confederacy in Fars province, south-western Persia, circa 1870-1880. The natural, undyed, woollen, ivory ground contains a popular design amongst the Nafar tribe, illustrating four chickens pecking at seeds on the ground. The bag is in very good condition, complete with a plain-weave back, in narrow bands of red and dark-blue colours.

Size: 28cm x 24cm (11" x 9").

The Khamseh confederacy comprises several diverse nomadic and settled tribes in the Fars province of Persia, known for producing distinctive handwoven textiles featuring rich iconography, dark wool foundations, and intricate geometric or zoomorphic motifs.

These pieces are traditionally crafted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation, often utilizing natural vegetable dyes derived from madder, indigo, and weld, woven on portable horizontal looms set up by nomadic weavers.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-spun wool with natural colour variations (abrash), symmetrical or asymmetrical knotting characteristic of Persian workshops, organic dye palettes, and authentic wear consistent with nomadic use rather than modern synthetic reproductions.

Such textiles can be displayed as mounted wall art in shadow boxes, framed on a neutral gallery wall, or placed flat on a console table to introduce texture, heritage, and rich colour palettes to contemporary or eclectic spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, gently vacuuming with a mesh screen covering the nozzle to remove dust, and avoiding chemical cleaners or excessive moisture.
