The William and Mary style flourished in England from approximately 1689 to 1702, influenced heavily by Dutch design following the accession of William III and Mary II. It is characterised by the introduction of new cabinet forms, elaborate veneering techniques such as burr walnut and marquetry, and architectural proportions.

Cabinetmakers of this era predominantly used native oak or pine for internal carcases and secondary timbers, overlaid with expensive face veneers like walnut, burr walnut, and feather banding. Construction often featured dovetail joints on drawers, hand-cut screws, and applied mouldings.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails, original brass hardware with correct patination, hand-planed secondary woods, and traditional animal-protein glues. Period pieces also exhibit the characteristic shrinkage cracks and oxidisation consistent with late 17th-century craftsmanship.

This piece works effectively as a statement anchor in a traditional study, library, or living room, contrasted against neutral walls to highlight the rich wood grain. Pairing it with minimalist modern seating or contemporary lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition of old and new.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels between forty and sixty percent, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasional application of pure beeswax helps nourish the historic finish.
