Description

A Small 18th Century George I English Walnut Bureau. C.1720.

Of late George I period, this lovely bureau is a fine example of English walnut furniture. Good signs of superior quality evident throughout. The interior of the bureau is also particularly nice, the shaped tops to the pigeon holes and the inlay on the central cupboard door being good examples of quality. It retains a remarkable colour and patination to the surfaces with plenty of variation in colour. Standing on shaped bracket feet.

A very nice example of small proportions.

FAQs

The George I period, spanning from 1714 to 1727, saw a transition in English furniture towards more domestic comfort and refined craftsmanship, heavily featuring walnut as a primary timber before mahogany gained dominance.

These pieces typically utilised native oak or pine as secondary woods, faced with finely figured walnut veneers, cross-banding, and herring-bone inlay, assembled with hand-cut dovetails and solid brass hardware.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-cut dovetailing on drawer boxes, the presence of historical timber shrinkage, candle burns or ink stains inside the fitted interior, and the natural patina of the walnut veneer.

An antique bureau can serve as a functional workstation or focal point in a modern study or living room, pairing well with minimalist seating to highlight the rich grain and historical character of the timber.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and applying occasional traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
