Description

This charming little dining sofreh was made by the Timuri - Sangtschuli tribe around the second half of the nineteenth century in the borderlands of north-eastern Persia and north-western Afghanistan.

Archaic in design, the natural, plain-weave camel-hair ground contains eight stylised trees and hidden amongst them is, what looks like, a small stylised 'dog'! The main border contains stylised four-petalled flowers and the skirts are complete in brocade.

Generally, this sofreh is in pretty good condition albeit with some minor wear in the camel-hair field as can be seen in the close-up photos and reflected in the very reasonable price tag.

Size: 1.35m x 0.65m (4' 5" x 2' 2").

A sofreh is a traditional woven spread used by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in Persia and Afghanistan specifically for serving communal meals and processing dough.

These pieces are generally hand-knotted or flatwoven using handspun sheep wool, often dyed with natural vegetable dyes to achieve deep indigo and madder tones.

Authenticity is indicated by irregular abrash colour variations, handspun wool with natural lanolin retention, asymmetrical tribal motifs, and authentic wear consistent with age.

These versatile pieces can be displayed as wall hangings, laid over low tables, or used as distinctive accent floor coverings to introduce texture and heritage into a room.

Preservation requires gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional organic washing when necessary, and keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
