FAQs

Pewter was a widely used alloy of tin, copper, and lead or antimony, serving as a durable alternative to ceramics and wood for domestic tableware throughout the medieval and early modern periods in England.

Authentic period pieces were cast in sand moulds or metal dies using a predominant tin alloy, then hand-finished on a lathe to achieve the desired thickness and surface profile.

Authenticity is determined by examining maker marks (hallmarks or touchmarks), weight, surface oxidation patterns, and casting flaws consistent with historical manufacturing methods rather than modern fabrication.

These metallic objects integrate well into rustic or traditional schemes when displayed on wooden surfaces, open shelving, or mounted securely on walls to showcase their aged patina.

Pewter should be kept in stable humidity conditions, cleaned only with a soft dry cloth, and left unpolished to preserve the historical dark oxidation and surface patina valued by collectors.
