1920 - 1940
Sold 13 June 2025 · The Vintage Wrist Watch Company
This “Gents 1930 Silver Fontainemelon Wrist Watch” found a buyer.

It was listed by The Vintage Wrist Watch Company. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Gents 1930 silver Fontainemelon wrist watch.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel hand-winding movement, probably by Fontainemelon, which is working nicely.

The watch measures 26.5mm wide excluding the later winding crown and 27mm high excluding the lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the hinged case back for Glasgow 1929. The case is in good condition for such an early piece, a small slight indentation to the back and a little unevenness to one side but overall not too detrimental at all. The back of the watch has an inscription, ‘Reg from Ivy, Nov 27th 30’.

The curved lens is in good condition (some reflection showing in the photos).

The dial is in its original finish. One of the hands is a period replacement.

The watch has a vintage leather strap, and it all comes in a new presentation box.

Date of Manufacture

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this Vintage Silver Wristwatch to the 1930s.

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Wristwatches from the 1930s frequently featured geometric case shapes, such as square or rectangular forms, influenced by the prevailing art deco aesthetic of the period.

Timepieces from this era commonly utilised sterling silver, nickel chrome, or rolled gold for cases, paired with leather straps and glass crystals.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining the movement calibre, hallmarks inside the case back, dial typography, and the presence of natural ageing and wear consistent with the period.

A vintage timepiece serves as a sophisticated accessory that pairs well with tailored formal wear or adds classic contrast to casual everyday attire.

Mechanical watches require regular servicing by a professional horologist, protection from moisture and magnetic fields, and careful manual winding to maintain working order.
