Gents 1940s Roamer German Luftwaffe Military Wrist Watch

1920 - 1940
Description

Gents 1940s Roamer German Luftwaffe military wrist watch.

The watch has a signed Swiss 15-jewel hand-winding movement, a Roamer MST 364, which is working nicely.

The watch measures 30.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs so although originally a man’s watch, it is on the smaller side. The case is chrome plated while the screw-on case back is stainless steel. There is wear and marking to the chrome plate, commensurate with the history and age of the watch. The case back is signed Roamer Watch Co to the inside, and it has the number D8857. As the code has the D prefix only, and not the H suffix, this means that the watch was issued to a Luftwaffe pilot or ground crew during the second World War.

The lens is in good condition.

The signed dial is in its original finish, luminous detail has been removed from the numbers and the hands at some point. There is light surface scratching to the dial although not really visible to the naked eye.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military wristwatches from the 1940s were designed for functional clarity, durability, and legibility under difficult conditions. Typically featuring high-contrast dials, luminous markers, and shock-resistant mechanical movements, these timepieces served service personnel during World War II.

Mid-20th-century watches were predominantly constructed using chrome-plated brass or stainless steel cases to withstand moisture and wear. Dials were often finished in dark enamel or lacquer with printed Arabic numerals, while straps were made from durable leather or canvas.

Authentic military timepieces generally display specific dial markings, standardised military issue engravings on the case back, and functional mechanical movements. High-contrast sub-second dials, original syringe or pencil hands, and specific movement calibres also indicate period originality.

A vintage military wristwatch offers a subtle, historical accent to both casual and tailored attire. Pairing the watch with neutral leather accessories or textured fabrics highlights its mechanical character and classic design.

Mechanical watches require regular servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years to keep internal lubricants fresh. Avoid exposure to water, strong magnetic fields, and extreme temperature changes to protect the movement and original dial finish.
