This Georgian Chinoiserie bureau from the 18th century combines practical workspace with traditional craftsmanship, rendered in a pale gold lacquer finish over wood. The slanted writing flap opens to reveal an interior arrangement of compartments, set above four exterior drawers in a two-short-over-two-long configuration, and the piece stands firmly upon small bracket feet. Hand-painted oriental landscapes decorate every surface, complemented by small brass drop handles and delicate floral foliage details along the frieze. Measuring 95 cm high, 97 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, the unit exhibits light signs of age-related wear across its varnished surfaces. Suitable for positioning in a home study, living room, or hallway, this practical writing desk provides surface writing space alongside enclosed storage for stationery and correspondence. The drop-front flap closes securely to conceal the interior workspace, while the graduated drawers underneath hold household paperwork or everyday items. Its antique finish complements traditional English country house interiors, functioning as a standalone focal point or a functional writing station in any room requiring classic period furniture.

A Chinoiserie bureau is a slant-front writing desk decorated using European techniques that imitate East Asian lacquerwork, gilding, and scenic motifs, which became widely popular during the eighteenth century.

These pieces were typically constructed with timber framing finished in layered shellac or spirit varnishes, featuring hand-painted architectural and landscape scenes applied over raised or flat gilded surfaces.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, natural timber shrinkage along the frame seams, fine surface craquelure within the lacquered finish, and period-appropriate cast brass hardware.

Placing a decorated bureau as a focal point in a hallway, study, or living space provides functional storage while adding historical pattern and warm colour tones against neutral walls.

Keep lacquered surfaces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement, dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid liquid cleaning products or abrasive waxes.
