Description

Just in from Iran, this charming bread 'sofreh' comprising a white cotton field of stylised birds and made during the early 1910s - 20s.

Bread 'sofrehs' were used for kneading the dough on before baking the flat-bread on a hot metal plate. During my search in Iran for these remarkabalke utilitarian weavings in the past, they were ofted caked in flour so that it was difficult to make out any colours or design. This sofreh has cleaned up well and is in excellent condition.

Other than the multitude of birds, I like the way the weaver has inserted a narrow band of undyed ivory wool through the centre of what is predominantly a white cotton field. Why she did this, sadly we will never know!

This sofreh will make a stunning wall-hanging.

A sofreh is a traditional woven cloth used historically by nomadic and village tribes in Persia for kneading dough, resting bread, and serving meals on the ground.

These flatwoven textiles are typically crafted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the warp and weft, often combined with supplementary weft-wrapping or brocade techniques.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the natural dye palette, the irregularity of hand-spun wool, tribal iconography, and the specific structural characteristics of the weave.

These textiles are frequently mounted and displayed as wall hangings or used as distinctive flatweave floor coverings to add geometric pattern and heritage texture to a space.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight, vacuuming gently with mesh protection, and avoiding chemical washing to protect the fragile natural fibers.
