Description

This exceptional silk embroidered suzani was clearly made as a dowry gift, and dates to around 1840. It was probably embroidered in the around the city of Uratube, Uzbekistan, as the the fuchsia dyes and design composition point to that region. The art of 'suzani' or needlework flourished in Uzbekistan in the 18th and 19th century as it was a major point along the silk road, and Uratube was one of the most important locations. Please look at the superb workmanship and absolutely lovely colours. As well the abundant use of fuchsia, one can see a wonderful aubergine, greens, yellows and pale blues. The design is expertly executed. The field is centred by an eight-pointed star medallion with flowers, and is surrounded my an elegant arrangements of floral blossoms and leaves, all arranged in a harmonious manner. The border repeats the same themes and adds to the elegance. Worked on a cotton foundation in silk with various stitches, this piece has survived in excellent condition. Professionally cleaned and lined.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Embroidered Suzani to the 1850s.

A suzani is a traditional type of embroidered tribal textile made in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and other Central Asian nations. Historically, these pieces were handcrafted by brides as part of their dowry, featuring symbolic motifs intended to bring health, long life, and fertility.

Traditional antique suzanis are typically worked with silk thread on a hand-woven cotton or linen foundation fabric. The embroidery is usually executed using tambour work with a hook or various surface stitches like couching and the basma stitch.

Authentic nineteenth-century suzanis can be identified by hand-spun foundational fabrics, natural vegetable-dyed silk threads showing slight tonal variations, and hand-stitched panel construction where narrow looms required strips to be joined together.

An antique textile like a suzani can be mounted on a stretched canvas or displayed behind glass as a focal point on a neutral wall. It adds texture, warmth, and global heritage to modern spaces when balanced with minimalist furnishings.

Vintage textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent silk degradation and fading. They should be professionally cleaned only when necessary and mounted using archival methods that distribute weight evenly without puncturing the fabric.
