Description

A rare and beautiful Baluch tribal rug in excellent condition made in the Sistan region circa 1880.

Another rug I have been reunited with recently and after 30 years of being enjoyed elsewhere, it is lovely to have it back in the fold!

The unusual ground colour resembles burnt-orange with three central rectangles comprising 'Mushwani' type lozenges. Very finely knotted, the outer 'laleh abassi' border is beautifully drawn and frames the rug in the most stunning way. It is complete with short kilim skirts each end.

Size: 1.70m x 0.94m (5' 7" x 3' 1").

This antique Baluch tribal rug originates from the Sistan province of south-east Persia, dating from 1880 in the Persian tribal style. Made from wool, the piece presents a dark navy field accented by a burnt-orange ground colour, alongside ivory and red details. The surface displays three central rectangles with 'Mushwani' type lozenges, geometric diamond medallions, hooked latch motifs, multi-tiered rust orange borders, and short kilim flat-weave skirts at each end. Additional elements include serrated patterns along the edges and fringed ends. Measuring 170 cm high by 94 cm wide, the rug functions well on the floor in a study, library, or hallway. Suitable for traditional interiors, it provides functional floor covering while displaying traditional tribal textile artistry.

Baluch rugs are hand-woven textiles traditionally created by nomadic Baluch tribes in eastern Persia and western Afghanistan, recognized for their geometric patterns and dark, saturated colour palettes.

These textiles are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft, utilising natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces feature soft hand-spun wool, a relatively low pile, a palette dominated by dark navy, terracotta, and rust tones, and distinct geometric diamond medallions with decorative end skirts.

A dark geometric tribal rug grounds a room by introducing historic texture beneath modern neutral furniture, within entryways, or in a study setting.

Regular light vacuuming without a motorised beater bar, immediate spot cleaning with cold water, and periodic professional dry cleaning by a textile restorer preserve the wool fibers.
