Description

Originally published in Eberhart Herrmann's 'Seltene Orientteppiche' Volume X, this rare and early bag-face depicting four cockerels in the central panel was made by Timuri tribes circa 1860 in the borderlands of north-eastern Persia and north-western Afghanistan.

Once part of double saddle-bags, at some point in the past, these bag-faces were cut from the original saddle-bags where dealers found it easier and more lucrative, to separate them, sadly! At least this bag-face has been preserved!

I love the way the weaver has moved the ivory outlining to the left of the lower-left cockerel in order not to cut into its beak. Quite charming and spontaneous in a tribal way. Subtle natural colours were used throughout with an amazing teal being used in two of the birds and elsewhere in this remarkable weaving.

A very collectable and early example of Timuri work.

Size: 56cm x 74cm (1' 10" x 2' 5").

A Timuri bagface is a small, hand-knotted tribal textile originating from the nomadic and semi-nomadic Timuri tribes inhabiting the borderlands of north-east Persia and north-west Afghanistan.

These historical weavings typically feature hand-spun wool pile on wool warps and wefts, often utilising natural vegetable and insect dyes to achieve rich, saturated colour palettes.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregularities in weave and design due to nomadic production, genuine hand-spun wool with soft lanolin retention, and natural oxidisation of darker brown or black dyes over time.

Such pieces are frequently mounted as textile art on linen backings within shadow boxes, or displayed on walls to add textural warmth, pattern, and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding heavy foot traffic if used flat, and gently vacuuming with mesh screening or professional conservation cleaning when necessary.
