A Carlton House desk is a distinctive type of writing table featuring a curved superstructure with drawers and compartments, originating in the late 18th century and famously commissioned for the Prince of Wales at Carlton House.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from solid mahogany and fine veneers, incorporating dovetailed drawer joints, brass hardware, leather writing inserts, and intricate stringing or inlay work.

Identification involves examining the timber grain, hand-cut dovetails, secondary woods used in drawer linings, traditional brass fixings, and signs of genuine age-related wear and oxidisation.

This piece works effectively as a focal point in a traditional home office or study, paired with a simple upholstered chair to balance its ornate superstructure without overcrowding the space.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and periodically feed the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
