Antique Inlaid Mahogany Leather Top Carlton House Desk

19th century
Description

A magnificent antique inlaid mahogany leather top Carlton House desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1900 period.

It is of the utmost quality, it has a very smart design and is a great size. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and beautiful grain patterns on all sides. The inset leather top has a fantastic colour and tooled edges, the central section lifts up to be a writing slope and is supported by a mahogany ratchet mechanism. There is plenty of storage space in the many drawers, which have high quality brass handles, Hobbs locks and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The upper section has a pierced brass gallery and lovely brass letter apertures that lead down into the small cabinets. This stands on tapered legs terminating in brass casters, it is nicely finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some very minor old wear and patina here and there beneath the polish.

The upper section lifts off for ease of transport, and is held in place by dowel pegs.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Carlton House desk is a distinctive style of writing desk designed in late eighteenth-century Britain, named after the residence of the Prince Regent. It features an ergonomic horseshoe-shaped arrangement of small drawers, cupboards, and letter slots wrapped around a central writing surface.

These desks are predominantly constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany or satinwood. They typically feature gold-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass gallery rails around the top perimeter, and delicate timber marquetry or stringing.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints inside the small drawers, original brass castors on tapered legs, natural wear to the leather writing skiver, and hand-carved or hand-laid wood inlays.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office, study, or library alongside a period-appropriate armless chair. Its finished back allows it to be placed away from walls, making it suitable for central room positioning.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain. Clean the leather surface with a specialized leather balsam and keep the piece away from direct sunlight or radiators to prevent veneer warping.
