Art Deco furniture emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by sleek geometric forms, modern industrial materials, and luxurious veneers that represented a shift towards machine-age elegance.

Pieces from this period typically utilized solid timber frameworks finished with highly figured decorative wood veneers such as birds-eye maple, walnut, and burr elm, often combined with contrasting darker stringing and chrome or plastic hardware.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-correct construction techniques such as dovetail joinery in the drawers, hand-polished shellac or lacquer finishes, and authentic backing materials on mirrors, alongside genuine signs of age in the timber and glass.

Pair the piece with minimalist lighting and neutral walls to let the striking grain patterns of the wood stand out, or complement it with velvet textures and metallic accents to reinforce the glamour of the 1930s aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by keeping the furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading and timber drying, and clean surfaces using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without applying silicone-based polishes or harsh chemical sprays.
