Bakhtiar rugs are hand-knotted carpets traditionally woven by the Bakhtiari nomadic and village tribes in the Zagros Mountains region of western Persia, known for their durable structure and distinct botanical or compartment designs.

These rugs are typically constructed with a sturdy wool pile hand-knotted onto a cotton or wool foundation, employing traditional symmetrical or asymmetrical knotting techniques using natural dyes derived from plants and minerals.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural color variations (abrash) in the wool, dense and heavy foundation knotting, hand-spun yarns with subtle irregularities, and characteristic traditional motifs such as garden compartments or large central medallions.

An antique tribal rug grounds a modern room by adding texture, history, and rich colour, working effectively as a focal point in minimalist living spaces or complementing traditional studies and drawing rooms.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand-washing by specialists in antique textiles, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to protect the natural dyes.
