Description

This dazzling Caucasian flatweave, often referred to as a Verneh ,manages to feel be both archaic and cool at the same time. Woven in five panels and then joined, the design is composed of squares in offset rows each decorated with geometric ornaments. Worked on a red plain weave background, the limited colour combination is dramatic with shades of red, yellow indigo, green and white, and touches of fuchsine. It's a mesmerising combination and a very good example of pre-commercial rural Caucasian weaving. Clean and in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Verneh is a distinctive type of flatweave textile traditionally produced by tribal weavers in the Caucasus region, often characterised by intricate geometric compartments and striking iconography.

These textiles are typically constructed using hand-spun wool for both the warp and weft, often utilising a Verneh technique which resembles embroidery or supplementary weft-wrapping.

Authentic pieces generally display natural organic dyes, characteristic hand-spun wool irregularities, traditional tribal motifs, and authentic age-related wear along the edges and foundation.

Such pieces can be used as floor coverings in living spaces or hung on walls as textile art, adding rich texture, historic character, and warmth to contemporary or traditional schemes.

Preservation involves gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodic professional cleaning by a specialist in antique carpets.
