This Victorian pedestal desk is constructed from warm brown mahogany with flame mahogany veneers and stands 76 cm high, 123 cm wide and 67 cm deep. The top surface displays a green tooled and gilded leather insert enclosed by a broad band and a moulded fore-edge. The frieze contains three drawers, while the dual pedestals each house a bank of three graduating drawers. Every drawer is fitted with two turned wooden knob handles and key escutcheons. The base features a heavy enclosed plinth moulding resting on concealed brass and wooden castors. Positioned in a study or home office, the desk provides a functional workspace with multiple storage drawers for documents and office supplies. Its freestanding finished back allows it to be placed away from a wall as a central room feature. The traditional design suits a library or executive office setting, offering classic Victorian character and practical surface area for daily writing or computer tasks.

FAQs

A Victorian pedestal desk is a large writing desk featuring a flat rectangular top resting on two independent vertical banks of drawers, known as pedestals, separated by a central kneehole space.

These desks were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, frequently featuring decorative flame veneers, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and an inset leather writing surface.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces generally show hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, original brass locks or wooden knob handles, castors recessed beneath the plinth base, and age-appropriate wear to the timber and leather top.

Pair the dark timber desk with modern task lighting, neutral wall colours, and contemporary art or a minimalist office chair to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax along the grain periodically; clean the leather writing surface with a specialised leather conditioner and keep the desk away from direct heat sources.
