This large pair of Dutch Baroque style fire dogs belongs to the 1910 period, styled as fireplace accessories suitable for an English Country House interior. Fabricated from polished brass and iron, the pieces present a striking gold colour with dark iron support bars extending behind. Each dog stands 51 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, designed for placement on a fireplace hearth. Every dog features tall turned baluster finials surmounting large spherical globes at the centre of the ball uprights. The ornate scroll-cast bases incorporate detailed rosette flowerheads and decorative moulding, terminating in solid block feet. This functional hardware provides a traditional decorative accent for an active fireplace or decorative hearth in a living room, study, or drawing room.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, are designed to support log fires within an open fireplace, elevating wood to improve airflow and combustion efficiency. The Dutch Baroque style is characterised by grand turned brass finials, bold architectural silhouettes, and ornate classical detailing developed during the seventeenth century.

Traditional fire dogs feature decorative front uprights cast from brass or bronze, paired with heavy forged iron horizontal billets at the back. The iron withstands direct contact with burning logs, while the decorative brass front remains visible in the hearth.

Authentic period examples typically feature heavy sand-cast metalwork, threaded or riveted assembly joints, and hand-chased decorative details such as rosettes, scrolls, and balusters. Inspecting the iron billet supports for hand-forging marks and natural historical patination also helps verify age.

Position brass fire dogs within an open hearth, inglenook fireplace, or modern minimalist fire surround to create a sculptural focal point. They pair effectively with natural stone, exposed brick, or dark marble mantels, introducing warmth and reflective metallic contrast.

Clean brass fronts regularly with a soft dry cloth to remove dust and soot accumulation. To preserve aged patination, avoid harsh abrasive polishes, while iron components should be kept dry to prevent rust formation.
