How do you clean them safely?

Professional washing remains the only safe method. Hand-knotted rugs need full submersion in cold water with pH-neutral soap to flush out abrasive dirt. Avoid domestic carpet cleaners and harsh chemical sprays. The alkaline solutions strip the natural lanolin from the wool and can cause historic dyes to bleed into the ivory borders.

My husband wants to put our heavy dining table right in the middle of the rug, but will the wooden legs punch through the foundation?

Castors or narrow wooden legs will dent the pile over time. The pressure forces the wool fibres apart and puts stress directly on the cotton warp threads underneath. You can mitigate this by placing felt cups under the feet. Moving the table an inch or two every few months also gives the wool a chance to recover its shape.

What does a low pile mean?

A low pile means the wool knots have worn down close to the underlying cotton foundation. Some buyers prefer this flat appearance. It gives the design a softer, blurred look that suits faded interiors.

Unroll it slowly and listen for any cracking sounds. Old cotton foundations dry out in hot lofts and become brittle if they sit folded for decades. Watch out for moth damage as you open it. Larvae eat the wool pile down to the cotton base, leaving bare patches that often hide in the deep creases. Lay it flat in a dry room for a few days before walking on it. The fibres need time to relax back into their proper shape.
