Rare Antique Ziegler Carpet

Description

A rare green back ground antique Ziegler carpet, woven around 1880-1890, the large scale design is exquisite with amazing yellow, pale blues and pink natural dyes.  A warmer red border colour with a flowing border design is wonderful compliment to the overall look of this large carpet.

We can see some old restoration and preservation to this carpet, which is often to be expected being 130 years old.  We always supply a tough anti-slip underlay which adds body and stops the carpet from moving on any floor type.

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with beautiful, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Ziegler carpets were manufactured in the Sultanabad region of Persia by the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. starting in the late nineteenth century. These carpets were specifically designed for the European and American markets, featuring larger-scale floral motifs, muted colour palettes, and softer wool than traditional Persian tribal rugs.

Authentic Ziegler carpets were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool was dyed using natural plant-based and mineral dyes, resulting in soft, muted tones of terracotta, olive green, ivory, and indigo.

Authentic Ziegler rugs are identified by their distinctive spatial design, which features open, large-scale palmettes rather than densely packed central medallions.
