What does rewired mean in these listings?

It means new flex and a new holder have been fitted for modern use. The word appears in 298 titles, more than any other qualifier in the category. Rewiring and certification are different things in the archive. Only a handful of titles mention PAT testing, so the word describes the work done and no more than that.

Which period do most examples come from?

The twentieth century, heavily. There are 408 listings tagged 1930s and 314 tagged 1920s, with the 1910s, 1900s and Edwardian following behind. Earlier material is comparatively thin. Victorian accounts for 35 listings and the 1880s for 15, and the two earliest tagged pieces are Empire-period electroliers dated 1800.

Are French chandeliers common in this category?

Yes. France is the largest national group by a wide margin, named in 389 titles, against 49 for England and 47 for Italy. Much of that group is multi-arm gilt or gilded bronze chandeliers, including birdcage frames hung with crystal. In current stock the French share is higher still.

How many ceiling lights are listed each year?

Around 146 a year on Sellingantiques, and 136 different dealers have handled them. That spread makes it one of the more widely stocked lighting forms, so the same broad types recur across many dealers rather than sitting with a few specialists.

What is a hall lantern?

A glazed, usually metal-framed enclosed light made for halls and porches. The exact phrase appears in 51 titles, with "lantern" in 158. The samples include hexagonal frames, convex glass, leaded and stained panels, and wrought iron. Lanterns are about one in ten listings in the category.

Do unusual one-off forms turn up?

They do, though singly. A chandelier of shells and glass, an antler triangle chandelier, an Italian galleon chandelier and a carved walnut ceiling pendant each appear once and nowhere else. A cast iron witches-hat light and a corona light sit in the same bracket. Alabaster is the exception that recurs, carved and dished, across the whole range.
