Description

An antique Baktiari runner woven in the south-west of Persia with a beautiful array of colours, wonderful birds and abstract tree designs in the main field with exquisite natural dyes.  This antique runner dates from around 1900-1910 and is in good condition in general, only a few areas of minimal lower pile.  Woven on a soft wool foundation, they tend to be light to touch and come in a variety of designs, but Baktiari rarely produced runners. A wonderful vibrant tribal antique runner to brighten up a hall or corridor.

Farnham Antique Carpets are specialists in antique decorative carpets, rugs and runners. Varying from antique tribal rugs woven in the Caucasus to classical Persian carpets dating from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century.

Bakhtiari runners originate from the Zagros Mountains region in western Iran, produced by nomadic Bakhtiari tribes and settled village weavers. These textiles are defined by geometric or compartment layouts, often incorporating central medallions, stylised flora, and avian motifs.

Traditional Bakhtiari runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, tied onto a sturdy cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. The wool is dyed using vegetable and mineral dyes, resulting in saturated tones of red, blue, ivory, and ochre.
