Silver overlay or silver deposit as called by some makers at the time, was a way of fashioning silver leaving visible glass in-between the pattern. The technique and workmanship is beautiful, and makes a very sought after and collectable item today.
This globe and shaft shaped bottle bears a large blank shaped cartouche, suitable for engraving if desired.
This lovely scent bottle was made by Alvin Silver of the USA, the premier and most important makers of silver overlay. It is marked with the patent number, their trademark, and 999/1000 fine on the base rim.
Alvin Silver was formed in 1886 in New Jersey and moved to Rhode Island in 1928, becoming a part of the famous Gorham Silver Corporation.
