A chimney board, or fireboard, is a decorative panel placed into a fireplace opening during the warmer months when fires were not in use, serving to block soot drafts and improve interior aesthetics.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid domestic oak, shaped by hand using traditional joinery and chisel carving techniques, often featuring heavy relief work and peg construction.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, oxidisation consistent with age, hand-cut joinery, and wear patterns typical of historical handling.

Such pieces function effectively as wall-hung sculptural art, mounted on plain plastered walls or positioned within traditional architectural settings to create a strong historical focal point.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity levels, avoidance of direct sunlight or heat sources, and occasional light dusting with a dry, soft cloth without the application of modern chemical polishes.
