Serpentine Antiques has dated this piece to the 1860s.
The hinged lid of the lovely oval frosted glass barrel is mounted with beautifully engraved silver plate mounts, having twin urn topped ring handles, and is surmounted with a wonderful cast sphynx finial.

It sits within a separate cast silver plate cradle, anchored with fantastic winged Egyptian caryatids linked by foliate garlands on all sides, with a carved base that echoes the engraved design on the lid.

The whole stands on very well modelled paw feet.
Maker's mark is S. Bros over B within a shield, not traced. It also bears the number 1632.
Size-8.75 inches long by 5.5 inches wide by 8 inches high.
Weight-2.75 kilos.

This is a truly stunning and rare item, quite unique. It is wonderful for biscuits, dressing table or vanity items. It looks lovely standing on table or sideboard, and makes quite an imposing presentation.
It is in very good condition.
