Description

Size: 5ft 4in x 2ft 9in (162 x 85cm).

Antique Baluch camel ground prayer rug a design that is typical of the Sarakhs Baluch of Khorasan.

Circa 1880.

The rug is beautifully drawn with a tree of life and has excellent colour, the camel wool ground is very soft. Of particular note is the human figure at the top of the tree just below the mihrab, the hand placements are also filled with large hands. The rug retains part of the original decorated end finishes at both ends.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear, and good pile. There is some wear to the goat hair side bindings and slight losses to the end kilims. The black dyed wool is corroded as one would expect.

The rug has been hand washed and ready for use or display.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Baluch prayer rugs were woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the border regions of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. These rugs prominently feature a mihrab, or prayer niche arch motif, designed to point towards Mecca during daily prayers, often accompanied by hand symbols in the spandrels and geometric tree of life patterns.

Tribal prayer rugs from this era were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation warps and wefts. The wool was dyed using natural plant and mineral dyes, resulting in deep terracotta reds, rich indigo blues, and camel tones.

Authentic period Baluch rugs typically display soft, high-quality wool with a lustrous sheen, asymmetric knotting, and dark selvedges often wrapped in goat hair. Subtle colour variations, known as abrash, naturally occur due to the small-batch hand-dyeing process used by tribal weavers.

A tribal prayer rug works exceptionally well as a decorative focal point placed on hardwood floors, layered over neutral natural-fibre carpets, or displayed as a textile wall hanging to protect the weave while showcasing its complex geometric artwork.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating beater bar to avoid damaging the delicate pile. Rotate the textile periodically to balance light exposure and hire a specialist antique rug restorer for periodic cleaning.
