We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian desk counter bell is a mechanical signaling device produced during the late 19th century, typically featuring a internal spring mechanism and clapper housed under a metal dome. They were placed on hotel reception counters, shop desks, and in private residences to summon staff or signal service.

Victorian desk bells were primarily cast from solid brass, bronze, or nickel-plated iron, often featuring cast zinc or iron internal components. The bases were frequently cast with decorative scrollwork, motifs, or heavy weighted pedestals to ensure stability during use.

Authentic period pieces exhibit cast metal construction with natural wear, original internal spring assemblies, and subtle oxidisation in creviced areas. Authentic examples typically display hand-finished scrollwork or foliage patterns and possess a distinct, resonant tone when struck.

A Victorian counter bell can be placed on a modern office desk, styled on a wooden bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes, or positioned on a foyer console table as a functional brass accent piece.

Maintain antique brass by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. To preserve the aged patina, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, and apply a specialized brass polish sparingly only if a bright finish is desired, taking care not to let polish seep into the mechanical spring mechanism.
