Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early nineteenth-century French Louis XV style freestanding bureau is made from warm brown kingwood with geometric parquetry inlay and gilt-bronze ormolu mounts. The bombe-shaped piece has a slant front fitted with a tassel-shaped handle, a stepped-down interior with a well, two small central drawers flanked by two cabinet doors, and cabriole legs terminating in scrolled ormolu sabots. Detailed chased bronze scrolling frames the slant front and cabinet doors, while decorative mounts embellish the corners and apron. The dimensions measure 100 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 55 cm deep, with a desk height of 71 cm. Position this writing desk in a home study, library, or living room as a functional workspace and statement display surface. The locking storage box behind the door provides secure organization for correspondence and small valuables.

FAQs

A bureau a pente, also known as a slant-front or sloping desk, originated in eighteenth-century France. It features a hinged sloped lid that opens to provide a flat writing surface while concealing internal drawers and pigeonholes.

These pieces are typically constructed using a solid hardwood frame veneered with exotic woods such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood arranged in geometric parquetry patterns. They are frequently trimmed with cast and chased gilt-bronze ormolu mounts.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn wood veneers, and heavy cast bronze mounts secured from the reverse. Signs of age often include natural shrinkage lines in the timber and subtle oxidisation to the metalwork.

Place the bureau as a statement accent piece in a study, drawing room, or hallway. Contrast its intricate woodwork by pairing it with neutral wall palettes, contemporary artwork, or minimal desk accessories.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the wood grain to protect the veneer. Keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, and clean gilt bronze using soft brushes without chemical polish.
