Rare Georgian Stool With Original Naval Needlework

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A rare and interesting Georgian stool with original needlework probably to commemorate the battle of Trafalgar. The stool stands on sabre legs line inlaid with ebony, all are in good condition and retain the original colour and patina. The needlework is in good worn condition with some odd areas of loss but overall, in very good untouched condition. The needlework depicts various naval and maritime symbols including on the top a central panel of Neptune surrounded by anchors. The side panels depict hippocamps supporting a central medallion of the union flag. The period of the stool and the symbolism of the needlework would mean that it was most likely made to commemorate the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The whole is a very interesting and decorative country house period antique. C.1805.
