This Victorian burr walnut davenport desk dates from 1860 in the gentleman's library style. The warm brown piece uses burr walnut veneer, walnut, leather, and brass, complete with a brass gallery rail, carved scroll supports, and a sloped writing surface. The davenport stands on four bun feet with panelled sides and a side cupboard door featuring inset handles, while showing carved scrollwork on the front columns, a metal key hanging from the desk drawer, and a green leather insert atop the sloping desk lid. Practical in scale, the desk measures 85 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. Suitable for modern homes, the davenport functions well in a home study or traditional living room as a compact writing desk and storage unit. The top section opens via the sloped surface, while the side door gives access to enclosed drawers inside.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a small, compact writing desk characterised by an inclined writing surface, hinged lid, and side-opening drawers or cupboards. Named after Captain Davenport who commissioned the original design in the late 18th century, these desks became widely used during the Victorian period for writing and document storage.

Victorian Davenport desks were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods and decorative veneers, including burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. The writing surfaces were typically inlaid with gilt-tooled leather, while structural elements featured turned brass fittings and hand-carved timber supports.

Authentic period Davenport desks feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass castors, period lock mechanisms, and age-consistent wear to the finish. The configuration generally places drawers on one side with matching blind drawers on the opposite side, accompanied by carved cabriole or scroll front supports.

A Davenport desk functions well as a compact workstation in a hallway, home office, or living room alcove. Placing the dark walnut timber alongside contemporary wall paint and minimalist brass lighting creates an effective visual contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to avoid drying or cracking the veneer. Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and maintain its original lustre.
