Antique English Sterling Silver Sewing Thread / String or Twine Dispensing Box - 1899

Description

An outstanding Victorian sterling silver box beautifully pierced or reticulated and made of a good gauge of silver weighing 2.94 Troy Ounces or 91.5 grams.

The box was recently purchased with a cotton reel in and described as a sewing thread dispenser but I think large for this and it is most likely a string or twine box. The knob on the top used to open the lid has the hole in the top which any of these materials could be dispensed.

The box has a beautiful set of markings, the English silver hallmark for London 1899, making this a true Victorian example. There is also a design registration number, 312662 for the previous year of 1898.

Superb condition, with a base diameter measuring 2 3/8" and standing 3" tall to top of finial.
