This nineteenth-century Japanese bronze vase from the Meiji period brings traditional craftsmanship into a contemporary interior. The dark brown body displays intricate high relief carvings depicting a carp in the river alongside a deer under a tree, accompanied by detailed waterfall motifs and trees bearing maple leaves. Subtle red, green, and gold enamel highlights brighten the leaves and the decorative patterned collar encircling the rim. Turned mouldings define the flared neck and the stepped circular base, which is detailed with a band of small inlaid enamel panels. Standing 52 cm high, the vessel works well displayed on a sideboard top or bookcase in a gentleman's library, study, or living room.
