This 1900 Chippendale revival writing table is made from rich brown mahogany with a hand-polished finish. The piece has a gadrooned edge moulding along the top, cabriole legs terminating in claw and ball feet with carved acanthus leaves on the knees, and blind fretwork detailing on the frieze. Brass drop handles are fitted to the two long upper drawers and two short side drawers. The desk measures 74 cm high, 111 cm wide, and 65 cm deep. Positioned in a gentleman's library or home office, the table functions as a workspace or study desk. The proportions accommodate daily correspondence and administrative tasks while providing surface area for a lamp, stationery, and books.

Chippendale style writing tables, originating from mid-18th-century English designs by Thomas Chippendale, feature carved cabriole legs, ball and claw feet, gadrooned edges, and intricate blind fretwork. They combine mahogany construction with symmetrical proportions and classical decorative motifs.

Authentic Chippendale desks are typically crafted from dense, solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, valued for durability and rich grain. Drawers usually feature solid timber linings with hand-cut dovetail joints and original cast brass swan-neck handles with ornate backplates.

Identification involves examining drawer construction for hand-carved joinery, inspecting the undercut details of the claw and ball feet, and assessing wood oxidation inside drawer cavities. Natural surface patination and authentic cast brass hardware with steel screws also signal historic craftsmanship.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office or library paired with contemporary lighting and neutral upholstery to balance dark wood tones. The piece can also function as an entryway console or a bedroom dressing table in traditional or eclectic spaces.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent timber movement or finish degradation.
