Antique Sivas Carpet

19th century
Description

A really beautiful distressed antique Sivas carpet woven in central Anatolia, dating from the late 19th century, it has wonderful natural dyes which have faded over the last 120 years.  With a cotton foundation it allows for a finer weave compared to other Turkish carpets such as Ushak. The design is classical and Persian in influence, with an exquisite and intricate medallion and corner motifs.  A delightful green border design of subtle plants and flowers.

We rarely hold distressed antique carpets in our inventory, unless they are as attractive as this! No major holes or tears, just general scattered wear in places.  Adding to the carpets character and charm. Our underlay would aid the carpets condition as it stops the movement on the floor.

Please request a home visit to see this lovely distressed antique Sivas carpet in situ to see if it works with your interior.  We travel all over the UK showing our carpets and rugs in situ and we would love to help you soon.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sivas carpets originate from the central Anatolian city of Sivas in Turkey, known for producing finely woven hand-knotted wool rugs from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. They frequently feature refined floral motifs, central medallions, and soft pastels or deep red grounds inspired by classical urban weaving workshops.

Traditional Sivas carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on a durable cotton or wool foundation. Weavers utilised symmetrical or asymmetrical knots to achieve dense construction and detailed curvilinear floral patterns.

Authentic examples display fine knot density, natural vegetable dyes with subtle tonal variations (abrash), and fluid floral compositions. Inspecting the reverse side reveals individual hand-bound knots rather than a uniform machine-woven backing.

A large Anatolian carpet anchors a space by introducing colour and texture beneath contemporary seating or dining furniture. Pairing deep red tones with neutral walls or minimalist timber elements creates balance between historical textiles and modern design.

Vacuum the carpet regularly without a rotating beater bar to prevent fibre wear. Rotate the piece annually to ensure even light exposure, and rely on professional hand-cleaning specialists for spot removal and conservation.
