Serpentine Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The top of the spring tensioned arch has a lovely monogram surmounted by a nine pointed crown suggesting a connection to nobility, particularly given the connection to the Imperial Court as seen below. A retention band holds and separates the two tong arms, and the curved design of the grasping portion, securely holds and protects the precious and delicate asparagus stalks.
Also marked Joh. Wagner and Sohn of Berlin. They were very well regarded silversmiths who were the court jewellers for Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Imperial German Court.
Size-8.75 inches long by 1 3/8 inches wide by 2 1/8 inch spread between the arms.
Weight-165 grams.
These serving pieces are not often found in solid silver, and being so desirable and collectable, are hard to acquire. They are still very useful for their original purpose, or for serving any other foods such as chops, sandwiches, salads, etc. All asparagus serving pieces are always very collectable.
A very fine addition to the dining table, or a wonderful and unique gift for an important occasion.
