Exceptional Group of 4 X Hm Silver Elkington & Co Rifle Presentation Beakers

1920 - 1940
Description

An exceptional group of four antique Elkington & Co hallmarked silver beakers all having relevance to the Gold Coast Rifle association rifle/shooting contests all won by Mr. Charles.J.Rigby in 1936/1937, three are for him, one is for a team win. The team consisted of Sir Arnold Hodson K.C.M.G, Mr.H.E.Pitt, Mr.J.Dunbar, and of course Mr.C.J.Rigby.

Sir Arnold Wienholt Hodson KCMG ( see the last photo) (12 February 1881 – 26 May 1944) was a British colonial administrator who was Governor in turn of the Falkland Islands, Sierra Leone and the Gold Coast.

From 1930 to 1934 he was Governor of Sierra Leone, where he was known as the "Sunshine Governor" and was responsible for the creation of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service, which launched on 7 May 1934. He encouraged African participation in government and had Sierra Leone "natives" trained to do jobs that had previously been reserved for bureaucrats who were imported into the colony from Britain. That same year he was knighted. Finally, he was Governor of the Gold Coast (now Ghana) 1934-41, and was the impetus behind the introduction of the Gold Coast Broadcasting System (now Ghana Broadcasting Corporation)

All solid silver and made by the highly regarded firm of Elkington & Co.

Mr.Rigbys, notable wins were for "The West Africa Cup 1936", 'The Guggisberg Shield 1936", 'The West Africa Challenge Cup 1937" actually won by The Gold Coast Team, Mr.Rigby was a member of the winning team with a score of 138.

The team win was for the "Coronation Competition 1937"

A superb group and a real snapshot from the 1930s, all in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
