A Stunning Pair of Rare of Original Sheffield Plate Storm Lamps by Matthew Boulton

18th century
Description

A Stunning and very decorative pair of Storm Lamps by the famous *Matthew Boulton who invented the old Sheffield plate process sandwiching two pieces of silver over copper. Much sought after these lovely lamps would add class and grace to any room. Hallmarked and with original glass tubes and snuffers.

c. 1780-1800

* Boulton was not a “goldsmith” or a “silversmith” in the accepted sense, yet for his achievements and services to the craft of goldsmithing he is fully worthy of inclusion in the list of great English goldsmiths. Matthew Boulton was born in Birmingham on 3 September 1728. But there’s more to Matthew Boulton’s story. In 1768, when his silver works was only six years old, he met young James Watt. Watt was in trouble. His new steam engine wasn’t running, and his patron was going bankrupt. Boulton knew talent when he saw it, and he bailed Watt out in exchange for rights to produce the engine. In 1776, Watt moved to Birmingham. The two of them went full-time into the steam engine business, and the world has not been the same since.
