Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
There is an empty cartouche in the centre of the front. Spring loaded, the case works perfectly and is in nice antique condition (there is a very small impression to the silver on the back of the case which we mention for accuracy).

Hallmarks are visible on the inside of the lid for the Chester Assay office with a date mark for 1898 and maker's mark for Colen Hewer Cheshire . Partial marks are also visible on the spring loaded side of the case.
