Description

A super quality rare English solid sterling silver vesta case. It is hallmarked STERLING ALLD for Adie and Lovekin of Birmingham - most likely made for export with it being marked 'sterling'. Interestingly it has been engraved 'Dulce et decorum est pro patria parti' which is the beginning of the famous poem by Horace, later associated with Wilfred Owen. It is often found on monuments to war so I would date this piece to the Boer War / WWI era. It is in ok condition being free from holes splits and repairs, it faintly ripples along the inscription and there is a small dent to the back, but it has probably been through a war - see final photos. It whistles well. It measures approx. 2.75 inches (6.6cms) long by 1 inch (2.6cms) wide and weighs 18 grams. A very interesting example.
