The Silver Cabinet has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
A solid sterling silver claret jug, assayed at the long-closed Glasgow Assay Office in 1890. The silversmith's mark is for James Reid & Co.
The decoration is beautiful. The body of the jug is heavily detailed with Tibetan-styled characters and birds.
There are initials in the cartouche, possibly 'ANP'. The handle is well-attached but a little loose at the top, as there are a couple of cracks in the insulator. There are a series of dents on the side of the base (also decorated!) which are shown in the photographs.
A beautiful item.
