Antique Mahal Carpet, Persian

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautifully elegant large antique Mahal carpet with a scrolling Mustafi design woven in Persia around circa 1900-1910.  The design is famous due to the Persian prime minister during the late 19th Century commissioned artisans to create a scrolling spiralling version of the 'Gol Farang' (which is a foreign flower; inspired by French and English florals) pattern that was immensely popular at the time.     As Ziegler & Co had inspired and created decorative floral carpets being woven in Sultanabad in the late 19th century other workshops locally followed suit and these designs were made in competition.

We love to help customers and interior designers source the ideal carpet for a room, if this beautiful antique Mahal carpet is of interest to you please email us to arrange a time to view it at home.  We travel all over London and the UK showing our carpets in situ.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mahal carpets originated from the Arak region of central Persia, produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are renowned for their expressive, large-scale floral patterns, softer weave structure, and rich vegetable-dyed colours.

These carpets are hand-knotted using a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural dyes derived from plants, madder root, and indigo create the characteristic muted palette.

Authentic Mahal carpets feature a slightly lower knot count with a soft, supple handle and hand-knotted construction. Inspection of the back reveals subtle variations in dye tones, known as abrash, alongside hand-finished selvedges.

A large oriental carpet anchors a contemporary space by providing grounding colour, textural contrast, and historic depth beneath neutral furniture. It works exceptionally well placed under a dining table or in a primary sitting room to soften clean architectural lines.

Vacuum regularly on a gentle setting without a rotating brush, and rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear and light exposure. Professional dry extraction or specialist hand-washing is recommended for deep cleaning rather than harsh chemical treatments.
