Antique Fereghan Carpet, Persian

19th century
Description

A stunningly beautiful rare yellow ground antique Fereghan carpet woven in the last 1/4 of the 19th century.  The design of connecting flowers with vines is quite exceptional using a variety of early dyes, delicate pale blues and greens and muted red tones.  The yellow background is a rare and exquisite colour to scheme around or with.  This oversize antique carpet is narrow too for its length of 20 feet.  The wool pile is very good with only minimal low areas in places.  A stunning large decorative antique Persian carpet which would look magnificent in a drawing room or dining room.  The variety of soft colours would be a joy to decorate with, as the carpet was woven in the golden era of weaving in Persia around 1880-1890.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & all over the UK by appointment.  We have travelled to Scotland and Ireland as well as Europe over the years to help customers.  Please request a home visit from us to view this oversize antique Fereghan carpet in-situ, we love helping customers or interior designers find the perfect carpet.

Fereghan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the Feraghan region in central Persia during the 19th century, these carpets are distinguished by their high weave density, fine wool, and intricate overall floral or Herati patterns. They were historically produced for both local nobility and western export, earning a reputation for exceptional durability and refined aesthetics.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. The dyes were traditionally derived from natural plant and mineral sources, creating rich terracotta, indigo, and cream palettes with soft colour variations known as abrash.

Authenticity can be identified by inspecting the reverse side for small, tight, asymmetrical hand-knotted knots, natural dye variations, and a soft, supple feel to the wool pile. Authentic period examples also exhibit classic design elements such as dense overall repeat motifs, refined cartouche borders, and an absence of synthetic rigid backings.

A classic Persian carpet serves as a grounding element in modern spaces, providing visual texture beneath minimalist contemporary furniture or complementing dark wood antiques. Placing the carpet in a living area or dining space allows its detailed border work and warm colours to unify the rooms scheme.

Preserve wool carpets by using a high-quality rug pad to absorb impact and prevent slipping, vacuuming gently without a rotating beater bar, and rotating the rug annually to balance foot traffic and light exposure. Professional cleaning should be undertaken by specialized textile conservators using non-chemical, water-based washing methods.
